Let’s begin with a brief history of fire, or at least what tools you use to start fires. In the beginning there was lightning. That was too random to be reliable, so our long-ago ancestors figured out how to use friction (eg, rubbing 2 sticks together) to produce heat and then to add a spark by striking a rock or 2 (something every boy scout and girl scout learned and promptly forgot).
Over the centuries, the two elements of ‘fire’ have been updated and simplified. In the 13thC, Marco Polo told of ‘chemical matches’, which evolved by the 19thC to ‘friction matches’, similar to what we know today as ‘safety matches.’ In the early 20thC, the Ferrocerium alloy made modern "cigarette lighters” more ubiquitous and butane fuel, originally an octane booster for motor fuel, found uses in various forms, including refillable and disposable lighters.
Butane lighters produce a flame more easily than matches, without risk of burning your fingers. But, in my experience, butane lighters always seem to run out of fuel (or appear to, when they won’t light!) exactly when you need them most. The 20thC also introduced piezoelectric technology - simply put, a form of electric spark - in stovetops and disposable lighters.
