Tweezer Tongs (sometimes called plating tongs) aren’t just for fancy restaurants! We first noticed these while watching Top Chef, but there clearly is a reason they are used in restaurant kitchens: they work and they are incredibly useful. Think of them as an extension of your fingers, but with so much more precision, and also hygienic!
Do you need to get a slice of pickled jalapeno out of a jar?...tweezer tongs! Do you want to put that same slice on your hot dog?...tweezer tongs! Do you want to get fancy and add a small sprig of dill to your smoked salmon hors d’oeuvre?...tweezer tongs! Once you start to use them, you’ll find hundreds of uses for them and wonder how you ever got along without them.
We tested a lot of tweezer tongs before we settled on these. We looked for the right-sized opening between the jaws; too little and you can’t pick up anything, but too large and they get in the way. We looked for the right ‘springy’ feel when you squeeze them: you need enough resistance to get the feel of what you’re handling, but not so much that your hand gets tired using them. We looked for the right length: too long and you lose control, but too short and they aren’t useful. And we looked at material and tips: stainless steel for clean precision, with serrated tips to get a good grip on whatever you’re picking up.
There are 3 styles, each with its own particular use: straight for everyday, curved to place small delicate items, and offset to give you a better angle for precise placement. These are all incredibly useful and, at just 8”/20cm long, they are easy to store in your drawer.
These definitely are Cool Tools, that will make your prep easier to perform and your plates more lovely to serve!
